I have some exciting news. As of two days ago I'm a member/tenant in a coop photography studio here in Portland. Here are a few pics shot with my little Leica point and shoot.
If you've read my recent journals you've probably heard me mention that I'm wanting to build up a fashion portfolio. I've started to have more interest from models and even some local designers, but my only option was really shooting outside. I've been shooting with natural light for years and I don't know much about studio lighting, but the rainy season is here. It's going to be wet and cold out a lot the next few months.
I wasn't really looking for a studio, but I heard about an opening in this one and I saw some pictures of it. I was really interested in the fact that there's a decent amount of natural light, that's really big for me. Once I got in the place it didn't take me long to sign up and get my key. The building is nice and so is the studio. The space is leased by a husband and wife, and they seem like really nice, solid people. I think there are other people who use the space who will be willing to let me rent lights and also give me a hand learning more about lighting, too.
I have my first shoot with a model already lined up for Saturday, we're going to do some headshots and maybe some fashiony shots. The other thing I'm really interested in doing is some nudes on black and white film with my Hasselblad. The studio should work pretty well for that. It's in an industrial neighborhood and it's private, despite the windows.

Thanks :) I'm hoping I can swing it. It's a little weird since I don't have any income from my photography right now, but I'm hoping maybe I can scare some up. It's month to month, so I can get out without too much damage if it doesn't work out.

I know, right? I was pretty excited by the pictures I saw of it, but even more sold once I got inside.
I went to see it the first time Friday after work. The guy actually didn't have the key, his wife had taken the car and it was inside lol. But we got in and were able to take a look around the building, and he was able to show me a similar space with windows facing the same direction. I was pretty much sold then. I got inside on Sunday and had the checkbook out pretty quickly.
The fact that the guy is so nice was really big. I've seen some of his wife's work too, she's really good. There's a computer there people can use, wireless Internet, and they have a lot of random equipment around I can use: tripods, a softbox and a reflector, some props too.
I really can't justify spending the money since I have absolutely no income from my photography, lol. But it just felt really right. And like I said, it's month to month, so I can get out pretty easily if I feel it's not working out.
