Last night I went to see Sufjan Stevens at the Riviera. It was an interesting show. My Brightest Diamond opened, which was a fitting opener (since the lead singer is also in Sufjan's band).
My Brightest Diamond is a pretty moody open music. Her voice reminded me a lot of Fiona Apple's which isn't a bad thing.
Sufjan and his band came out, all wearing wings. They honestly looked like kites that were repurposed for the role of wings. It made for a pretty dramatic entrance.
I had a good time, but Sufjan just didn't seem that into it. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who really gets into things, but he seemed especially unassuming last night. I think part of the problem is the set list. The first half of the show was older material that a large portion of the audience didn't know. He played two instrumental songs to open, which isn't condusive to getting the crowd into it. Don't get me wrong, the crowd definitely was into it, but I think he didn't capitalize on the energy that was in the crowd before the show started.
We had a large debate about the show today at lunch, and the general concensus is that none of us were especially happy with the proformance. All of us had different reasons why we didn't like the show, but I felt that it could have been a much better show.
It's sad, because I was looking forward to this show more than any show I had been to in a very long time.
On another note, he didn't play Decatur. I was especially disappointed in that.
