I'm in Washington, DC with 20,000 of my fellow librarians. I wonder how many other librarians are starting their day with GG?
I've already been doing conference stuff for FOUR days and I'm kind of sick of the crowds and having to be constantly in professional mode. Sometimes I just don't feel like chatting pleasantly about libraries and books and ... read full entry >

Look what I got to do on vacation:

My lady and I spent the last week in the Great American Desert and stopped in at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah where we got to hang out with their rescued pigs.
Pigs totally rock.
I love pigs!

Things are suddenly moving fast around here. At my big event less than two weeks ago someone asked if I'd be interested in applying for a job. It's totally an inside thing--the job hasn't even been advertised--and now they want to see my resume.
I'm kind of flipping out, mainly because this new job pays about $40,000 MORE than I make now.
There's ... read full entry >

I am so incredibly relieved that my BIG THING is over, I can't even begin to say. I have next to nothing on my plate for months to come, which means I get to focus on whatever strikes my fancy. Which is nice.
AND there's a brand new LOW album out, which is always a good thing. Not so keen on the new Modest Mouse, but I sort of expect them to crap ... read full entry >

Tomorrow is the big day -- a full day of listening to academic papers followed by a blowout reception to open the exhibit I've been slaving over for about six months.
I think everything is ready, but there's always something...
Anyway, this is where I'd like to be right about now:

Great, low key short stories from Dan Chaon. I bought his novel too and I'll start that next.
Good stuff, with subtle undercurrents of creepiness and violence.
Just how I like it.

What I love about the Victorian detective story is how totally ass-backwards some of them are. I haven't had a chance to read this one yet -- Mystery of a Hansom Cab was the most popular detective novel of the 1890s -- but some of these guys are totally fucked up.
In the one I read last night they tell who the murderer is halfway through, then they ... read full entry >
