In hopes that my wonderful fiance (@dykerecovery) will get through the next Purgatory, and because she and I are both keen to enhance our portfolios, I've just about finished putting our photography kit together. We are now all set to do shoots anywhere I can get power or run a generator...
Here is the set up:
At this early stage I prefer floods to flash/strobes... They allow you to get the exposure right easily, and to see where fill lighting or flash is required. Allows one to assess shadows really easily too. Makes for a hotter room, and is arguably slightly harder on the model having a constant light...but if I was in front of the camera I'd prefer a constant light more than flashes... I'd be keen to hear views from Gods Girls on which they find better...
I use special globes that simulate sunlight - and give of a very white light compared with normal tungsten globes:
The 3,200K "Nelsen" is particularly good - gives a great flood or backlight that's a pleasure to work with.
I also just picked up a reflector (80cm) that will be handy too.
As far as Camera equipment goes, we use a Nikon D5100. It's at the upper end of the amature cameras, but has the sensor from the Nikon D7000, which is at 16 Mega Pixels, is at the bottom end of their professional models. It is a full digital SLR and is able to be operated in full manual mode, giving me excellent hands-on control. the D5100 offers the same ISO settings as its D7000 big brother - extending up to an equivalent of ISO 25,600. It also inherits 14-bit Raw shooting - one of the factors that helps give the D7000 its impressive dynamic range - which is something Nikon used to offer only on its more expensive models. The best thing is perhaps that it take all nikon lenses.
Here's a closeup of the camera and the lenses we've currently got:
The flash is the pro SB 800, here set up as a remote, wireless fill slash.
Lenses from right to left, with an example photo of @dykerecovery that was taken with each lens:
1. Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3-5-6G (multi purpose - good for a lot of nude shoots) good value for money, and an under-rated lens. I love it.
2. Nikon DX AFS Nikkor 55-300mm 1:4-5.6G ED (zoom a general purpose. Being able to go up to 300mm is very handy to frame "moving subjects" - like @dykerecovery when she's dancing around)
3. Nikon Nikkor 85mm 1:1.4G (portraits) a fucking expensive lens, a favorite with professional portrait photographers... it is a beautiful piece of engineering.
The 85mm is a hard lens to learn to use... This is from my first play around with the lens... I'll get better with it.
Here's 2 more pics of @dykerecovery from the last couple of months:
