i've shot i dont know - 50,000 digital still frames - if that was film it would have costed me a fortune.
but it was not film it was digital. unfortunately a very poor digital camera and lens combo. actually the lens was the weaker of the two but the camera had its down falls. basically this all added up to having to take a percentage more of frames just to make up for the poor image quality.
dont get me wrong - they are relatively sharp and relatively deep in pixels but the color is off and the contrast is off. thats what a crappy lens plus digital will do for your pics. i absolutely hate my camera. its for sale! $300 with the lens? nah i better keep it so i can shoot bulk jobs for now - but i might as well use a point and shoot and im not even joking. they have better glass than this thing. i'm reluctant to shoot in general under the present conditions honestly and i'm planning to switch to film.
i started out with film. now - of 24 - 36 images taken with film, one or two would look wonderful at least. 95% of the work was finding good locations, and then developing or scanning the film. im pretty sure i will switch to black n white and develop my own. my work will not be in the digital realm except to can the images. color film will have to be sent off i suppose. and it will have a cost involved. but so does shooting with a nice digital which i currently do not have an cant afford the $2,000 cash for.
so back to the title of this writing. "a waste of film" would refer to a waste of time, and effort because clicking a million clicks does not save me time. it just takes up valuable time that would and should be put into the passion of composing. SCREW DIGITAL! it is nothing more than a technical learning tool that helps us who dont have the money for film to grow faster. i started in film and it will always be my backbone.
thus, film yields higher results. digital creates a clarity where it isnt needed and noise where it isn't wanted.
film is an artistic medium. it removes obviousness and instead of stripping a human or landscape of life, it gives it a gentle nurturing blanket of sympathy.
so wheni shoot film, it truely does something for the work. it takes a little time to review with a loop and scan or develop, but so does uploading and editing and "fixing in post" of innumerous digital garbage.
a film session should be and always is well planned out and wrapped in care and loving consideration.
a digital session is heartless.
these are the extremes ive noticed.
a film camera makes you feel it more - the older the better.
so thats it.
i hate my digital and i love film. if i have to shoot 36 exposures of film for an image set, maybe i will. thats $3 of film per set, and costs about $10 to develop and process maybe. i could charge that on top of my normal fee. then i can store the actual film in an actual container.
whos with me?
all my pinup shoots will be film sept-nov
