"Vain & Vapid: Resources of Plenty Our Generation Has to Offer"

This is just my opinion.

But I've been thinking about this a lot and recently found myself in a conversation about this with a potential love interest.

Why is it that no one bothers with having substance anymore?  Your hair and makeup is perfect? Awesome, you DO look hot, I agree...but WHAT DO YOU DO?!

What happened to people, and more on my mind right now, alternative girls,  having really awesome hobbies and interests? Having passion and interest for things that don't involve your appearance? A drive for knowledge of the world around you? WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

WHY is it happening?

I honestly believe that when you don't pursue interest and hobbies, knowledge or learning  experiences you wind up with an empty shell. At this point all that you can do is pretty up the appearance, which is all that's left.   And to the outside world, you look GREAT. You really do.

but I want more.

Don't you?

thank you, i totally agree. maybe cause ive always been on the ugly side so i had to have a personality. i dunno,it seems a big part of the problem is the general media, they project that if you arent a size 2 and dumb as a post, you arent worth shit. and now with even more people being online where you have to go on pictures and such, it increases the vain aspects, kids are not learning proper social interaction cept when they tweet etc..  i dunno, there is allot id like to say i just cant form the right words to best to say it

Since when could you enter in a zipcode and get a plethora of images of all that city's residents?! Its a geographical lookbook, and  everyone is scrambling to be seen and to be seen at their best. How do you think this effects people start acting? Its a totally different chapter in human social habits. It changes a lot of things.

When I think of the internet I like to think of the passing of knowledge, the option to meet someone in a different country, or even just a different city, and learning who they are and how they shape the community around them....I like people........and i like the internet....but i dont like what the internet appears to be doing to so many of my generation.

i agree with you 100%, the internet is a great tool, but as so happens with many things designed to help us,they are warped and abused and stretched far from the original function.

This is why I rely a lot on personality and interests even when I look for a potential mate. Looks aren't everything in this world, sure it can get you places, but if you only rely on looks and have no interests or passions in life then you're boring. I feel that a number of people aren't concerned about the poor people in this world or someone less fortunate than they are, it's all about them. For instance, there's a war out there and hungry people and other major issues going on in this world and we have a month of Michael Jackson and his legacy, which, by all means is good for what he's done for music, but there are other people that leave important marks on this world too.

I know exactly what you mean and this is a perfect example. There are babies dead in the street because the war OUR country is waging.

And there are people sincerely crying and gawking about Michael Fucking Jackson?

WHO THE FUCK CARES. Oh hes an AMERICAN ICON?! Right. I want to know what scientists are doing, or what new discoveries are in the world, progresses in science and other intelligent persuits. And maybe even figure out how to stop making other human beings, like you and me, with real feelings, off to kill other people?? I just dont understand how people ignore it to the extent that they do.

And I'm not saying I'm not guilty of "forgetting" the war or any of the world's events- I mean...I do admit that I get lost in drawing or playing dodgeball, or watching a movie or something with Indica. I'm just saying its like people are doing that thing where they put their fingers in their ears and go, "LALALALALALA"

(la la land, as its known).

word. I think cause "alternative" is now mainstream. or at least really getting there. I've met more people in the "alt" scene who get tattoo's just cause they're cool, and same with listening to the type of music. I find that most people are just shallow and haven't found their place in the world. Or maybe I'm just feeling bitter right now. But I try to surround myself with people with are creative and actually doing shit, regardless of their appearance.

I also really think it doesn't matter what music you do or do not listen to, or what tattoos you have or dont have. I dont think any of those things can really make you cool or uncool.  Like a haircut, or owning a single speed, or wearing a red and black flannel. One way or the other. Whether you think you're awesome for having it, or if you think whoever has it is a fucking joke. Either way, a bike does not make someone cool. And a bike doesnt make someone uncool. You can substitute "bike" with just about any object.

And you know, I dont look at an attractive, well dressed girl (or guy) and think, "That person is probably vapid." I always give people a shot. And the fact of the matter is some of those people really do lack the personality and motivation that I really need in a close friend or a romantic relationship. So with that process I just discover where I'm willing to draw the line with each person I meet. So even if they dont have what I would need from a close relationship, I've found that most people have something about them that I can enjoy and appreciate on some level.

Most, not all.

yesss! I concur. I make sad faces when I mistake people who appear to be "alternative" for just that, and they end up not having any thoughts and all they want is to get wasted and for people to look at them. Everyone has tattoos and weird hair and whatever now, I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed because I did it first or something, because I know I didn't, I just want them to think and care about something.

Right. I'm sick of the lack of intellegence. I hate seeing people who dont challenge themselves with the facts of life. I just dont understand how a new lipgloss is more important than Americans blowing up other humans, babies and all...

I just eugh. I'm so nice to pretty much everyone...but I realize now that there are SO few people who I could really give a shit about because there are SO few people now adays, especially in our age group, who care for anyone but themselves. Its really unsettling.
