This is Thomas, my Florida frog. He has replaced the awesome pit bull pup I left back home when I came out here to do some exploring.
I've been missing my familiar, and just as Emily Dickinson said "Narcotics cannot still the tooth which nibbles at the soul."
I found myself in the need of some animal companion.
That's when I saw Thomas, hopping about under the porch light, like he wanted in.
Nothing is really cuter than oversized features on miniature sized things.
He has the plumpest little body, and the stickiest toes, but when he jumps, his limbs are so long he looks like a suicide falling off the Empire State Building that has changed its mind.
He's a very peaceful and introspective frog. When I dream, he talks to me. He tells me he's not really sure if he's coming or going anymore, that life is a kind of blurred smudge between ennui and elan.
I know. Deep.
Also, he's afraid of gators, and cancer. Snakes not so much.
I've tried to let him go for two nights in a row, (because it is wrong to keep wild things) but he's always there the next day.
I know its him cause he has a funny/gimpy front arm. (You can see it in the above pic, the way its all curled under him and stuff.)
I know there are a ton of frogs hatching and hopping out of the wilds around here nightly, like huge, adorable cockroaches, and I jog over their myriad carcasses every morning, but he's mine, and I like to think of him as somehow endowed with special gifts and that he can tell me apart from other creatures.
He jumps right into my hand and I like to sit with him in the shower stall and just kind of watch him for a while, or think, while he perches on my shoulder or my knee, and then I put him back outside.
He's out there right now.
Waiting to get eaten by something bigger than him in the rushes and long grass while the chirring crickets play their same monotonous waltz.
Le Sigh.

You should hear the coqui frogs that are all over the place in Hawaii. When my mom calls, sometimes its so loud it sounds like a rock concert. And she's still indoors.

I'll bet. Out of curiosity, would "the Rainbow Connection" be playing in your head? It always does in mine when I hear frogs.

Can frogs get cancer? I suppose all animals can ...

I think the only animals that don't get cancer are sharks or something.

I absolutely, mother-fucking LOVE frogs!!! They were my favorite animal growing up & I had a total of 10 frogs through my childhood. I also was so obsessed that I taught myself to literally ribit like a frog. It's my only vocal talent, I'll prove it to you someday ;)

When I was a kid we couldn't afford real pets, so I wouldcollect snails in jars and feed them lettuce. It was rad.

niiice. This one time I was vacationing in Missouri & I found this toad / frog, I wasn't sure what it was, but I couldn't let it go. I kept it in a jar & snuck it on the airplane without my mom even knowing till we got on the plane. It was great....

this was wonderful. i remember finding a frog like that at my grandparents house once, as they were about to put up a party tent and probably impale him. I saw him hopping in the grass and saved him and sat outside with him in my hand all night. it pained me to let him go and leave.

I heard frogs have herpes so I was scared too. Or is it just reptilian/amphibian specialists are just called herpetologists?

He was out there this morning hopping in circles. I think he needs me to feed him.

It was probably just his gimp arm that was causing him to go in circles. :x
I'm guessin the froggie-eatin's are good there, or else he would've probably moved on already. ;)

It's nice you found a balance between freedom and security by letting him go everyday, but he does seem to be looking for you....

You really want to start that fight on here? BTW, she told me that your mom told her that you were adopted. She's never had the heart to tell you, but I have no heart, and so I don't mind.
