HAAAALP ME. plz. posted : 01/29/09 at 05:50pm pst

i am trying to apply for financial aid so i can finally get my stupid effing degree. i have lived on my own for almost a year and take care of everything for myself financially. my parents have not claimed me on their taxes since i left school three years ago. i have taken care of myself since then, even paying rent while i lived at home, paid for my own food, etc etc etc etcetcccc.

soo according to the us government i am still considered DEPENDENT ON MY PARENTS because:

1. i'm not 24 years old yet (uhh ok that's in less than six months)
2. i'm not married
3. i don't have children
4.i'm not in the us military
5. my parents aren't dead

so, the aid that i could essentially get by myself (which, i think would be a lot considering i don't make a lot at all, barely over minimum wage), is not going to happen because now my parents' salaries have to be taken into account which is TOTAL BULLSHIT because they have nothing to do with my schooling, and have not supported me since 2006.

i called the fasfa HOTline and the woman told me that because of the above criteria i am still not considered independent. i don't think i impressed her very much because i asked if i should go get pregnant or kill my parents so i can get the money i need so i can BETTER MYSELF AND FINISH SCHOOL AND LEARN THINGZ, since COMPLETELY SUPPORTING MYSELF means absolutely nothing.

how does this make sense?
have any of you applied for aid and had the same problem? what are some ways around it?

help me. :( i don't want to take out ten thousand million dollars worth of loans again, and since i am NOT AN ADULT my parents would have to cosign those loans with me again ANYWAY which is not an option. help help help help.

this happened to me, they told me the only other way is if my parents were disabled or sick.

there was nothing i could do, someone told me to get letters from fmaily, parents, and like my priest, so i did to prove i was independent. but that didn't work either. I just eneded up having to take out loans since i got no assistance. The system is so not fair, they need to realize that in today's day and age, it is mor elikely for someone who is 18+ to be living on their own. and if we could prove it then i dont see why they give us such a hard time.

I am going through this very same thing right now. My birthday is Jan 12 1985 which means I only missed the deadline thing by 12 days! You could try talking to your schools financial aid office and telling them that you have absolutely no contact with your parents and see if that works. I've just decided to wait another year. :/
