Sorry to hear about the loss - I can empathise. Had an incident a few months back where I nearly lost my laptop due to an airport baggage fuck-up (my laptop contained last 3 years of e-mails, notes and heaps of other stuff I'd written). After that point I made certain that my data always got backed up (though of course it's something I hate investing my time into).

Last ditch effort: if it's out of warranty, and repair shops want to charge you too much to fix it, and you're about to give it last rites, you can try the following:

Open up the laptop (best to use an anti-static wrist strap so you don't zap stuff). Spray the affected circuit boards with distilled water. Manually wipe away any cola residue (so it doesn't corrode stuff). Use a hairdryer to dry everything out thoroughly, then put everything back together. Should only be attempted if the laptop has an external AC wall adapter, not if it's got an internal one.

I managed to rescue an MP3 player that my sister put through the wash using this method (which she later allowed me to keep). If you're willing to give this strategy a go, then all fingers crossed. Electronics is one of my side hobbies, as you can see it makes me rather resourceful at times.

See ya round anyway, hopefully you'll be back soon :)

Oh noes!  I hope the warranty is still good on it!

You haven't lost it all!

go to PC world or PC shop, get a outercase for a harddrive, then take the harddrive from the bottom of your comp, install it into the outercasing and then attach it to another laptop or PC and it acts like an external harddrive that you can carry about with all your stuff on.

I did that when my compter did a complete mess up so i could save all my stuff onto another compter. x
