Porn As Pedagogy

Last week I had the immense honour of meeting the BedFellows Research crew and attending the Porn As Pedagogy screening and discussion in Liverpool. Bedfellows is made up of artists Chloe Cooper, Phoebe Davies and Jenny Moore, three queer, feminist badass babes who share the opinion that porn is a powerful creative medium with the power to affect social change, and get us off at the same time!

Over the course of the evening we watched several beautiful queer porn shorts curated by PinkLabelTV, shared a delicious vegan dinner, and chatted about the way in which our sexualities and genders have been simultaneously validated and exploited by the adult industry. It was such a privilege to meet so many young people who believed in the power of queer and feminist porn to radically shift the harmful and reductive views our society holds around sex and hear to their stories first hand.

For those who didn’t go through a Paulo Freire phase - the term Pedagogy literally means a ‘method of teaching’. Basically the Porn as Pedagogy event framed porn as a sex education tool, and a tool to resist heteropatriachal and white supremacist values that often bleed their way in to how we view sexuality and equality. It was amazing to be surrounded by people who believe in the power of queer porn to transform society like I do, and I truly treasured the connections made that night.

Queer Porn Screenings are more than a chance to watch hot people fuck each other, and then meet some sexy people afterwards. They are a gathering space for the community, where we can explore and enjoy our sexuality in a safe environment. These screenings are integral to reducing stigma around marginalised bodies and sexualities as they literally bring queer sex out of the bedroom and in to the public area.

By creating community spaces to watch and critically engage with queer porn, Bedfellows is facilitating much needed dialogue around sexual identities, desire, consent and gender and I couldn’t be happier to call them my new friends and feminist allys!
