for those who dont know ... im a huge fan of making something out of nothing. i take a punk rock view point when it comes to spending money on shoots. i believe the best work is produced when you allow restrictions to take place. freedom is death to an artist. and i love a challenge. i love seeing what i can come up with at the spur of the moment. what i can make happen with nothing more than a tank of gas. so i set out the day before this shoot with an assistant of mine to go dumpster diving. i had a basic idea of what i wanted. normally i dont even have the slightest clue, i just allow fate to dictate what ill use in my sets. so the general idea is to make a set that resembles an anonymous alleyway and some random blues shack in the middle of the south. luck was in my favor all day ... we found piles of really worn pieces of wood at one location. we found the couch elsewhere. teh book shelf somewhere else. they all fit together. so we got back home and start putting things together. btw. i made my own studio in my backyard. its 16X16X10 and the outsides are exposed. so i used the side of my studio to start tacking down the various pieces of wood. placed the couch in front of it. now the carpet was actually already there. yes, my backyard is about 50% carpeted. that came from another dumpster outing when a friend of mine and i happened across a dumpster in a bowling alley parking lot. apparently they ripped out all their old carpet and put in new. so we took everything they had. ya know one of those massive dumpsters that at least 20 feet long? well we emptied that thing and carpeted my backyard. good stuff. i always feel a little guilty cause this stuff is just trash and theres no real way for me to sanitize it .. BUT ... modeling is not a glamourous thing. its often painful, awkward, and stressful. but theres not much getting around that. its not unlike shooting nude in the woods. theres tree bark, ants, whatever ... and none of it is particularly sexy. for this ... we had to deal with the cold as well. but they were both troopers. thats one thing i love about GG, i dont think ive ever had a girl complain. i feel supremely guilty for putting a woman through this but i know its going to look great on camera and thats sorta the nature of this business. its cool to see a girl on a bed. but for me personally, i like the fantasy aspect. and this is an odd one but a fun one nonetheless.
