I am totally enthralled by stumbleupon.com. If you haven't heard of this you need to check it out. Basically, it's this plug-in for Firefox that you download and it installs a toolbar in your browser that has various buttons that serve their own special purpose but the most important is the stumble button. When you install it you are asked to set up your preferences so when you click the stumble button the browser returns a page result based on your preferences and voila! you have now discovered something really cool that you may not have discovered through regular browsing. I found so many new sites using it. My favourite to date is www.passiveaggressivenotes.com.
I was reading my psychology textbook today and the chapter that I read was about studying behaviour scientifically. It had a section about the behavioural phenomenon called bystander apathy. I had read something about this before in an article about a woman named Kitty Genovese who was beaten and raped in the courtyard at her apartment building in Harlem while 38 of her neighbours looked on. Nobody did anything to help her, probably because they thought since there were so many other people that saw then another person had probably called the police. It's been reasoned through research that the presence of multiple bystanders produces a diffusion of responsibility, in which each person feels less responsible to intervene. One of the stories that was in the section really disturbed me, it was a similar incident that took place not that long ago in Detroit. I don't really feel like typing out the story but if you're interested you should read this http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-17414493.html
I have to get back to watching b-ball now!
