Okay, so normally I wouldn't push any sort of political or social agenda on anyone, least of all online, but this has actually gotten me pretty pissed. Because of the way that our state budget was allocated this year, the number of classes offered was cut by 18%, tuition was raised almost 30%, and teachers salaries were cut by 12%. In addition we now have furlough days where sometimes we wont have a class and other days the campus will be shut down entirely.

Honestly, my first response was a mix between "wtf?" and "woo hoo! mini vacations!" But now that I'm actually back in the class room, furlough days have me pretty ticked. Teachers have been forced to either cut the amount of material that is taught over the course of the semester, which means I'll be learning less, or have been forced to try and cram as much information in to the smaller time allotted, which means I will be learning less because I wont be able to retain as much or things wont be covered in as much detail. Not only this but it is going to take everyone even longer to graduate, myself included, because they wont be able to get the classes they need. I've seen this happen to four of my small number of friends on campus already this semester, so I can only imagine how many more are struggling with this.

One of my instructors gave us some information on the numbers involved in this funding cut. Even if you don't or are unable to get even slightly involved, please take the time to read some of these over. It's more than a little staggering what is happening to the California Public education system, CSU and UC alike.

Without the CSU, what would happen to California?

- No higher education for 450,000 students per year

- 91,600 students would not graduate next June

- 89% fewer criminal justice BA degrees

- 80% fewer teachers

- 59% fewer nurses

- 40% fewer computer and electronic engineers

- 35% of first generation students would not graduate

- 15,000 Veterans could not participate in “Troops to College”

- $7.46 billion generated by the CSU would be lost to the state

- 207,000 California jobs would disappear

- Two million graduates would not pay $760 million in state taxes

- We would no longer have one of the best higher education systems in the

world

- We will no longer have enough educated workers for knowledge-based jobs

- In 2009 California ranked among the bottom 5 states in percent of students in

college and in tax effort for K-12 education.

- By 2025, 40% of California jobs will require a college education but only 30% of

population will have one. 1.8 million more graduates are needed for a knowledgebased

workforce to bring California back to prosperity.

- California now spends more money on prisons than on higher education.

CSU was cut $584 million this year. What kind of California do you want?

TAKE ACTION:

Write to your elected state officials and tell them you want a California with an

higher education system that supports the state’s future

Yeah. I hope they are kicking themselves pretty damn hard at this moment. It's gotten out of control. As for me, It is about time for me to get my get my voters registration moved to down here, and start writing some pointed letters to the elected officials of this state.
