Hi friends, I'm just trying to see who likes what as far as music in 09 goes. I'll do one for each genre worth mentioning and so on. So what are the hard rock/metal albums you've heard this year that are incredible?

Actually, no. Not 'nuff said.' There was a slew of downright amazing albums this year, and there's more coming. Just yesterday Between the Buried and Me released The Great Misdirect and that one is sure to be on many best of lists at the end of the year.

you are also talking to a person whose favorite album of the year is a pop punk album. So for me that is enough said. Those two are in my top ten.

Okay, fruits. Here's a short list. I'll attempt to provide full album streams and/or tracks from the albums.

Mastodon: Crack The Skye - This was my favorite album of 2009 for several weeks and then I saw them perform it live in its entirety. As much as I wanted to like the album, watching the performance was like a chore. It just felt bland (aside from truly incredible songs 3 songs) compared to their previous work. I still think its a phenomenal album and probably the most 'fan friendly' from them if you haven't listened to Mastodon before. Give it a listen.

Listen to: Oblivion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6WGNd8QR-U

The Czar - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXSUU9bTYhY

The Last Baron - Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xXJu-C7_fU Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrZif1LR9QA

Mantic Ritual: Executioner - Most people I know aren't too hip on the 'return' of thrash. It's seen as an unoriginal, rehash of shit that was done better back in the 80s. If you get off of your high horse for a minute, you'll see that some of these new thrash bands can play well, not just play fast. Mantic Ritual's 09 release Executioner is an example of riffs, grooves and solos played right.

Listen to: One by One - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pTmuWqtohk

Panic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmtxo3U4pVc

Baroness: Blue Record - I had to listen many times before I gave it any props. Maybe I was listening to dying fetus too much while trying to get into this one. I'm glad I finally paid attention to it. This album is beautiful. It's so moody and I can imagine that when you're smoking a fat ass blunt you get sucked into its mood and vibe 10 times more than when sober. The tone of the guitars is perfect. The drums are magnificent. The vocals are sloppy and harsh, and that's pretty much the only way they should be sung. There aren't too many albums that I can sit and listen to all the way through, but Blue Record is definitely one of them.

Listen to: Bullhead's Psalm - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGI88eghEdQ

The Sweetest Curse - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRVoADOIRSs

The Gnashing - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8looviJGAKA

3 Inches of Blood: Here Waits Thy Doom - Sometimes you just wanna put a record on and drive really fast, or play your shit realllly loud. That's what this album is for. It's not a "deep" record in the least bit, or the most technical one, but it sure is a fun listen. I don't even know who to define it. Its like...Medieval Metal. From 79.

Listen to: Battles and Brotherhood - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-sUoUO2ixM

Preacher's Daughter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqihjMv9uUE

Call of the Hammer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhiYgqgKlcs

Revocation: Existence is Futile - I think this is by far my favorite album this year. I don't even know what to say about it to be honest. I bought it while on a road trip, and played it 4 or 5 times in a row before I uttered a word. That word was "Fuck." From the intro to the ending track, there isn't a point on the album that didn't amaze me. Vocals, guitar (the solos..my god, the solos) drums..all fantastic. Its wild that only three dudes are making this much noise.

Listen to: Pestilence Reigns - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdCh34e6juc

The Brain Scramblers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxcwbwgyLCA

Anthem of the Betrayed - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqWLRVIzcJs

The Tragedy of Modern Ages - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYiMTx8dOPo

Not listed are a bunch of bands whose members are crab-like hybrids or incorporating horse noises into their music. The bands on this list are none of that gay shit.

More to come.

i understand you didn't put them on your short list, but you did mention the new BTBAM record.
on track 3 - Disease, Injury, Madness - around the 6:50 mark is a horse whinnie.
it's kinda subtle and i didn't notice it until my third listen, but it's there and it makes me laugh every time now.
