Evelyn Evelyn
Eleven Records
by Josepha
Conjoined twins Eva and Lyn Neville were born in 1985. Their mother died during childbirth. At age 11 they joined Dillard and Fullerton’s traveling Circus. It was during this time that they discovered their love for music and performance and eventually quit the circus at age 19 to pursue a career in music. Like every musician in these times they created a MySpace profile to promote their band and this is how Amanda Palmer, singer of Dresden Dolls, and experimental musician Jason Webley found the twins and decided to produce their first album. They released the record “Evelyn Evelyn” in March 2010 and touring began.

The press text says and Jason and Amanda keep the myth of the twins alive by telling cute stories about them “They are shy and didn’t want to talk to me first, they like me more now that I cut off my beard” Jason said on an Interview with German TV-station ARD. Amanda and Jason wrote blogs on the twins’ story and even created a twitter and Facebook for the twins. But obviously the sisters are actually Jason and Amanda themselves.
As intended people got confused.
Many believed the Evelyn-sisters were real Siamese twins that are now on tour with Amanda and Jason, others got offended cause they thought that showcasing the girls was cruel. Later, when the first people finally noticed that Eva and Lyn are actually Amanda and Jason in a Siamese twin costume of sorts they got offended and felt that they had been lied to.

Frankly, it is not that hard to recognize the vocals as Amanda’s and (not only cause it is a male voice) Jason’s.
Let’s get to the music.
The songs on that storied record are of huge variety. From dark kinda-lullabyish songs over show tunes in cabaret-style to folk music “the sisters” covered a lot of genres. You get dragged into the strange and frightening world of the twins from the first song “Evelyn Evelyn”.
Readings of their story are placed between the songs so that you feel like watching a movie or musical when you close your eyes.
The power-ballad “My Space” features a lot of guest singers like Tegan and Sara, Gerard Way, Frances Cobain… the daughter of Nirvana Leader Kurt Cobain, Weird Al’ Yankovic, Andrew W.K., Margaret Cho and many more.
The last song of the album is one of the cutest Joy Division-covers I ever heard. “Love Will Tear Us Apart” with an Ukulele.
If you are into musicals, dark story-telling, cabaret and freakshowish stuff you should definitely buy this record. It is the best concept album I ever heard.

… and keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming show-review of the twins Cologne gig.
Sneaky little siamese-non-siamese-twins-not-twins musicians.
